Join the Cedar Cottage Food Network and the Vancouver Public Library for the fourth of our 2016 Seedy Saturday workshop series. Each event includes a workshop on a gardening topic and a seed swap.

This interactive workshop for parents/caregivers and children has two parts:

Firstly, join us for a garden-related Storytime at the Kensington branch of the Vancouver Public Library. At Storytime, parents and caregivers are supported in their roles as their children’s first and most important teachers and shown ways to share language with them. Lastly, participants will move across the street to join gardening instructor Frankie Filippelli for some fun activities at the Kingcrest Community Garden. These activities can be transferred to home gardens where the adults and their kids can continue learning together.

This workshop has very limited space so please pre-register. This workshop is for families with children ages 3-7 (no more than 2 children per family at this time).

This event is free but seating is limited so please pre-register online or in person at the library branch. Light refreshments will be available. The facility is wheelchair accessible.

See you there!

Seedy Saturday: Garden care and seed saving – May 28

SeedySat05.28.16The Cedar Cottage Food Network and Vancouver Public Library – Kensington are proud to present our third workshop in the 2016 Seedy Saturday series: Garden care and seed saving. During this workshop, participants will learn about the essentials of garden maintenance throughout the season including watering (especially with summer restrictions on the way), harvesting, pest control, soil testing, and more! The instructor, Kim Del Valle Garcia, will also cover how and when to save seeds for next season (and to donate back to the seed library!). Seed saving is an important part of garden care, as it helps you plan for next season and maintain the heritage and biodiversity of seeds – it’s nice to know exactly what you’re planting and eating.

Seeds will once again be available through the seed library and our donation box will be on hand if you have some you’d like to share with others in the community. Although the event is free, registration is required either online or in person at the library branch. Light refreshments will be served.

Seedy Saturday : Permaculture 101 – April 16

SeedySaturday04.16Join the Cedar Cottage Food Network and the Vancouver Public Library for the second of our 2016 Seedy Saturday workshop series. Each event includes a workshop on a gardening topic and a seed swap.

For our second workshop, the focus will be an introduction to permaculture. Permaculture is a philosophy that encourages working with our natural environment instead of against it. For example, permaculture suggests grouping certain plants together in a mutually beneficial way (sometimes known as companion planting) instead of row planting. Permaculture can be similar to indigenous planting practices; as we know, First Nations peoples here in Vancouver, which is on unceded Coast Salish territories, are a wealth of knowledge in terms of growing food and medicine. Instructor Kim Del Valle Garcia, who teaches intensive permaculture courses at the Hastings Community Centre, will go over practical applications of this way of thinking. Introduce the 12 principles of permaculture in your garden this season!
Following the workshop, participants are welcome to take seeds from the Kensington-Cedar Cottage Seed Sharing Library. Donations of saved seeds are much appreciated! Please help keep our seed library stocked.

This event is free but seating is limited so please pre-register online or in person at the library branch. Light refreshments will be available. The facility is wheelchair accessible.
